Yummmmy! I loved this place. My dear friend Stephan took me there for Mommy's Day last week. A few years ago, on the recommendation of a friend as it was his favorite place, I decided to get some take out. I don't remember being overly impressed so I never returned. Until last Sunday, and then tonight. The service was great. It was rather slow so we really didn't have to wait long. My favorite was the Tsunami Roll: spicy albacore and cucumber wrapped with nori, rice, a thin sliver of lemon and more albacore. The lemon was something new for me. The bitterness of the rind balanced with the juice of the fruit gave the roll a fresh flavor. I can't say too much about the ambiance. It's not fancy at all, but the sushi makes up for it!

I like zipangu its not the best but its good and affordable. this place has been their for years.... I enjoy special lee roll and also the cheaper teppanyaki...Me and my buddys call this place ghetto-yaki. The wait staff could do a better job getting food out together with other orders.

    Where is the Zipangu love?

The teppanyaki rocks here. The chefs talk to you, do all the cute little tricks, and the food is excellent and well portioned. The boyfriend always get the alligator, and it's REALLY good. They also have ostrich on hand, which is also good! I usually stick to the calamari and the chicken because it is freaking delicious.

The decor leaves something to be desired, and the wait staff is a rather absent after your drinks are served, but they get your order and you're left to enjoy your show and meal without them getting in the way.

I haven't had the sushi so I can't comment on that, but if you want a better teppanyaki experience than the main stream places who don't do the little tricks and barely acknowledge your existence check this place out!

Normally when I think of teppan yaki, I think of expensive, small portioned amounts of food. Putting all my prejudice of teppan yaki aside, I have to say that Zipangus was alright.

I opened the menu and wasn't too surprised by the prices...However, I was surprised by one thing on the menu: Ostrich. That was something that I had never seen on any menu; teppan yaki or not. So of course...being the adventurous person that I am...I order the ostrich.

The "show" was just the same as any other that I have seen before. There was this one Food Network Challenge that I had seen before where they based the performance of the chef on three things: 1) Uniqueness, 2) Speed (eg. onion volcano), 3) Performance. Our chef did pretty well; very friendly, skilled etc...but it was the chef at the table next to ours that was the head honcho.

He did some flips and spins with his super sharp knife, but what really got me was the volcano he did. He poured the oil in the onion, then lit it on fire. Unbeknownst to all of us, he poured some oil all over his hand, and lit it on fire on purpose...waving it in the air like a mad man. Maybe all the alcohol that he was drinking while cooking earlier had finally got to him haha.

The reason I give Zipangu's a 4 star rating is for Uniqueness and Creativity. Having ostrich on the menu (and apparently alligator too) set them apart from all the other places I had been to. Also, the performance of the chef was unique compared to any others that I have seen. Although this small restaurant may look kind of ghetto from the outside, the service and food inside is really what sets them apart.

My bf and I love this restaurant. we like to have the tepanyaki , I always have the same thing, I get the chicken with the spicy sauce it is delicious,,so yummy. And the chefs are always so nice and funny. This is a great place to eat.

So, what can i say about Zipangu's. First of all it's very affordable sushi. They give you big rolls and it's very delicious. My favorite roll that i always get there is the crunch roll. When i go to other sushi places the crunch roll is very small; but here at Zipangu's it's pretty big. It kinda takes long to get your food but i believe it's worth it.

The best thing here is the Spicy Baked Mussels! If you love mussels you have to try this.

    i've become a regular here.

Went here with my best friend and she was raving about how delicious it was and it was better then the sushi place we regularly went to. I had my doubts because its tucked away in a corner. I was SURPRISED!!!! I believe the sushi chef is named Kou (not sure on the spelling) but what a creative mind!!!! We ordered the Island roll and it had so much flavor, it was amazing! The presentation of the roll was even more amazing. Then he gave us a treat, a orange and lemon shaped to look like a bear sitting on the beach! Truly a gifted young man! Not only did I experience sushi at its best but saw the most beautiful and creative presentation. Will return again and again!

This is the best sushi place in Fresno in my opinion.
They give huge portions compared to Wasabi,Yoshino's, Sushi 80's etc. and they have the best Baked Mussels in Town.
I would recommend Zipangu in a heartbeat

Love this place. I have not been here for a while because they started going downhill a few years ago. I use to come here all the time and loved it back then. Not sure what caused the change all those years ago but I have to say I am extremely pleased with the improvements. I will be coming back for sure!

I've been here for teppanyaki, sushi, and a drunken night of karaoke; and if I must say so myself, it's always a great and memorable experience. I think on Saturday nights they open the restaurant up to live karaoke. I never thought I would go up on stage to perform because heck, I wouldn't even sing in front of a mirror to myself, but after a few sake bombs, I was screaming my lungs out to Journey's "Dont stop believing." Anyway, the sushi is fresh and probably one of my favorites for Fresno. Their teppanyaki offers a large portion with great show and totally worth the moolah.

I REALLY love this place because one night after dinner I walked into the parking lot and found a lopsided Honda. :( I quickly discovered a nail in one of my tires, and the very nice owner of zipangu came out and helped me put the spare on. NO LIES, this really happened. I highly recommend this restaurant because they DEFINITELY go above and beyond with their services.

Well since it was a day of celebrating, my 18 year old finally got a job, so I can finally stop stressing over my future of being "that" mom! You know the one! Son, age 42, living at his Mom's. His room hasn't changed much since he was 17, except for some updated games for the Xbox and the indoor gardening hobby he has really taken to since he lost his job at the 7-11.
OK Now back to the REVIEW!! THIS PLACE WAS AWESOME!! I was a LOT skeptical by the very "blah" appearance of the place, but referred by friends who said I wouldn't be disappointed, and I wasn't!!
We went for Teppanyaki. Our chef was so personable! He talked to us throughout the entire show, didn't have just a few tricks, but a lot and made jokes and interacted with all of us, actually initiating conversations with us! The kid just had a personality that really showed he enjoyed what he did!
We all know its about the show when you pay to sit down for Teppanyaki and TOTALLY worth it! My youngest ordered the Shrimp and my son and I ordered the Chicken, spicy. DELICIOUS! The shrimp was more than enough for my son, which NEVER happens! This kid actually couldn't eat it all. And the spicy sauce was a little different than what we were used to at the other places as far as texture?, but it was really really good! All the portions were large and this place gives a shrimp appetizer as well . No more expensive really than any other place.
Oh and the waitress didn't disappear here! We never had to wait for our drinks!! I know what you're thinking! I would not lie about this! Shes the only one I have ever encountered that did not use the magical powers that other teppanyaki waitresses use! I tipped her big time for that alone!

I have read the other reviews but it's obvious that this place has turned it around since then because we will definitely be going back soon!

My favorite restaurant of all time!! It is nothing fancy,.. But I'm there for the food mainly! So who cares! I can't begin to describe how delicious my teppanyaki meal is! If I could only eat one same meal for the rest of my life, it would be the spicy chicken/shrimp meal! The fried rice is amazing! The shrimp has a special taste of lime and soy sauce! Ah! What you MUST have is their spicy sauce! Pour over anything and it will be heavenly! I've had it at other teppanyaki places and nothing comes close to the special flavor this one has.
Also, their miso soup is deeelicious! Their salad dressing is the best I've ever tasted. I've tried other things there as well, such as their sushi and I've never been disappointed! I will say though,.. I'm mostly speaking wonders for the teppanyaki! Must try that first! The chefs always become good friends of ours. They aren't stingy and give generous portions. It's a fun, chilled environment with the BEST teppanyaki I will ever have. Everyone we take there, absolutely loves it! Although, I must admit, I don't think anyone else loves it as much as I do. I can't imagine anything tasting better. Doesn't look like much when you see it, but give it a chance,.. And fall in love!

This place has been a friday night regular for my husband and myself. The sushi chefs all know us, and it gives us that CHEERS feeling. The rolls are great and very inexpensive. Sashimi is very tasty. We bring all of our friends here. Do be warned that looks can be deceiving. Would recommend the lobster dinamite! A little spicy but it is a favorite.

  • *****

Really think they have the best fried rice in town! Always order their yummy roll. Teppan is cheap and chefs are friendly!

I just went last night and they have closed!!!!!!!!!!!

This place has tasty food. I have been going here for over 15 years.
Love the sushi rolls. They have house special rolls that are wonderful, I love the yummy roll, lives up to its name. They have many to choose from and they have allowed me to substitute fish's if I dont like it. Very fresh, never had a issue with freshness.
They have a wonderful appetizer called mushcrab. has baby portabella mushroom cap topped with "spicy" sauce (its not spicy my friend doesn't eat spicy and she LOVES these) krab, and another baby portabella mushroom cap with sauce and them tempura friend. They each into 4 bite size pieces with a tempura dipping juice/sauce. YUM!
My guy and I also get the miso soup, very tasty.
The down side is the service. Slow, and they dont check the order before they bring it to you. Other than that the staff is very kind and friendly.
Place is clean and I can always get a set. Not to say there are always people eating there.

Once you find this place using your smart phone, put it down and enjoy real Japanese food being served by a real Japanese owner. The fish is amazingly fresh and this place feels like a dive bar; where you're going to get authentic, great in a somewhat hidden locale.
They have all you can eat lunch specials for sushi, Teppan-Yaki for dinner, and poke bowl's.
The owner talked with me for a while about his experiences with the slowed traffic on the Shaw and how it has hurt his business. That benefits me because I don't like to go to trendy places and wait forever to be sat or to eat.
I'm going to bring my friends here and I'm going to suggest it to everyone I know (within a 40 mile radius) because this place is really authentic and really a genuinely a rare find in sad, chain-based Fresno.

I've been a fan of Sano for almost 20 years through his various restaurants. Some people on this site have bad comments on not getting served in a timely manner or the food presentation was so-so. For personalized one on one service, you need to sit at the sushi bar. He does have other wait-staff there so I don't know what happened with those other people that say they didn't get service. Sano has always been a one-man show since he's a stickler about how sushi is done. He's doesn't have the sharpest, glitziest, neatest presentation but he excels in the most important ways which is awesome quality of seafood that's superior to most, big selection of fish that hardly anyone around has and generous size slices and portions that very few offer. He has fish that few if any other sushi bars stock and is happy to tell you all about where is comes from, the texture, the flavor. You can really tell the difference in the fish meat even with the most common like tuna, yellowtail, salmon, etc., which incredibly tender and rich compared to other places. He knows from experience how to select the best fish meat, pure and simple. Sano is very "old school" as his restaurant is very simple, quiet, straight forward, face to face experience which is the traditional manner a sushi bar is in Japan. I really don't like some of the flashy and trendy high-end gimmicky sushi bars. I'm not paying for that.

Great experience. Food was delicious. Wait staff friendly and good people. A good alternative to the other busy restaurants in town. Highly recommend it!!

  • *****

Had to lunch today. Our food was great our chef was David.. Glad to have teppan yaki back..

  • *****

Love this place. Best Teppan-Yaki in town by far. Hot and spice sauce is fire. Need more cooks, one Mexican can't cook for everyone.

  • *****

Finally had a chance to check out this place again. There are so many sushi/Japanese places in Fresno now...probably second to Mexican restaurants! Either way, I was excited to see if this was going to be a good or bad experience. Most of the reviews are 50/50 with a lot of complaining about various picky things. I get it, no one wants to have crappy service or food or atmosphere, but you get a clear picture of what you are walking into as you walk in.
I have been to 5 star places and I have been to "hole in the wall" places, and most times each one can be deceiving. To me, most "hole in the wall" places have some of the best food you will ever taste. It just depends on what you are looking for in your dining "experience".

SO...myself and two guest get seated at the sushi bar. We meet Sano, who is the owner/sushi chef/sometimes server. Great guy full of personality. Apparently, he was the original owner from years ago. The menu has changed from last time I was here, but it's sushi. I can figure it out. After a few questions about the food, he then steered us towards the all-you-can-eat sushi menu. All you can eat sushi (under $5 menu), fried rice, miso soup, etc for $20. Great deal. Kept it simple. You obviously have to order one thing at a time, finish it and then on to the next to save wasting food. (It's not hometown buffet folks). Sano was very attentive and put together some amazing sushi as we sat there. He even made as a few things off the menu to try! The server was a little green but was hustling to make it work. Very friendly. I have high expectations for customer service and it was solid here. I also try and engage in being as friendly as I can knowing that goes a long way when getting customer service. (HINT: being a jerk, being high maintenance and leaving that "$1 tip" will be remembered by that person who tried to do their best. I've never been a server, but have witnessed people degrade servers as if they were not even human. Very disgusting.)

My overall thoughts on Zipangu is...it is affordable for what you get. The food is solid for the price. $9 pitcher of beer works for me. Could the atmosphere be better? Sure. Can it look cleaner and more organized? Yup. Can it be just as fancy as those other places? I don't see why not. BUT as with most "locally owned" places in Fresno, you can only do so much with what you have and be competitive. I will come back soon and enjoy another $20 all-you-can-eat dinner. I will support this local place.

I use to visit Sano many years ago at the same location, I just realized he reopened so I picked up a couple of sushi rolls togo. It was just as good as i remember, give him a chance you won't be disappointed!!

  • *****

Sano is one of the best sushi chefs in Fresno and makes some of the most delicious and creative dishes around. The teppan here is great too, but make sure to make reservations since its a small restaurant that does get busy.

  • *****

We loved eating at Sanos location in Visalia but he ended up moving back to his old fresno location. we still make the drive to eat there. Obviously this isn't on the part of town where most people go to eat dinner but to me for the price and quality of sushi this place can't be beat. My wife and I can eat four $34 plus tip and be full and satisfied (all you can eat $20 and their best roll the Spicy and Melting $14). Sano is a traditional Japanese Sushi chef and is generous with his portions.

zipangu has a long history in my world. came here almost weekly for a couple years then they closed, now they are back! i ordered the all you can eat option for sushi $20. the rolls were very large, and not because of heavy rice use. i would have gone 5 stars but they are a bit slow considering i was the first one in the door.

  • *****

Okay, so they got their Tepanyaki back....so they can have their 5 stars back! Seriously good food, great prices. You can't beat that! I came a few months ago- there was no Tepanyaki and the service blew. They switched management a few times so I assumed that was it. But we're having dinner here tonight for my kiddos birthday and it's been great. Great server and funny/friendly chef. You gotta come back if you were like me about to write this place off. It's worth it and you won't regret it.

The food was amazing had a filet mignon so tender. Service was great and highly recommended!

I'm sorry to anyone how had a bad experience. I want to let you all know we have new staff all new waitresses. If you'll notice the previous employees that were posting mean things on yelp are actually the ones that people are complaining about.. Anything lover three weeks ago was when they were employed. We r fixing things up. If you have any feed back when you do come in let us know. The customers happiness is our main priority. I know we have slot of loyal Sano followers. He loves his customers and he's been a great boss. Previous employees really made the restraint go down hill. And I personally apologize. We're making Zipangu great again. Teppanyaki is up and running so call and make reservations. And please no the customers opinion is important to us. We want you to have a great experience. I hope we see you all again soon. Thankyou!

  • *****

Great service and very fresh Sushi. The Miso Ramen was very tasty as well!

  • *****

Do not eat here! I have been working here months busting my butt for sano, he does not pay his employees. He has been giving me the excuse that hes waiting for a loan. The reason why all the teppen chiefs left him was because he don't pay! He is not a good man, he hired all new staff and fired me because he owes me 6,000!! The food is pre cooked and the beef is really old!! Your best bet is only eating sushi.. Just had to put my 2 cents out there I wouldn't give my money to a greddy man!! If his business closes soon it's because all us former employees sued him!!

  • *****

Ok, here we go. We went here on Labor Day. We wanted teppanyaki but were informed that there was no chef. We seated ourselves and waited a bit to get drinks and to have our order taken. The place is run down and dirty, but I was hopeful.

There were 3 parties in the restaurant, and 1 server. Not only was he the server, he was the host, cook and sushi chef. He was it. We knew we were in for a wait, a long wait, but we were in no rush. We placed our order and waited. I must say, for being the only guy in the place, he was doing a great job. He brought out the food in a fairly quick manner. I was hopeful.

About an hour and a half in, our food started trickling in. I was able to try everyone's food as it was brought out. I was ordering sushi, my order came last. Everything was fantastic. I ordered a number of rolls, and they were worth the wait. Next time I'm trying the ramen. We were there for a little over 3 hours, but I would do it again. The food was worth the wait. However, be for warned, your gonna wait.

I've followed Sano, the owner and sushi chef par excellence, for 21 years except when he went out of state. The sushi is the best I've had anywhere. Period. When he recently reopened Zipangu at West and Shaw, my wife and I were ecstatic!
We go nearly every Friday night!
The restaurant facility isn't big on atmosphere, but if you want the best sushi in California, you won't let that stop you.
Great service and conversation with Sano. Good idea to go early and sit at the bar.

  • *****

Really good sushi, but unfortunately the atmosphere and service are not up to par. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because our sushi rolls were amazing.

Food: We ordered the triple shrimp roll and the tiger roll (I think those were the names). Both delicious. The fish was fresh, perfect amount of spice. Really good. I've also had the california roll at another visit which was really good.

Price: Pricing was very reasonable. Good rolls for $10, even a selection of basic rolls for $13 which was awesome.

Atmosphere: Let's just say take-out is the way to go, or sitting at the sushi bar. The rest of the place was very dimly lit and looked worn down. My son, however, really loved the bright mint green hallway going down to the bathroom and even asked if we could paint our bathroom that color. LOL.

Service: Service was horrible. On the night we went, the waitress didn't even stand up at first when we walked in. She continued to sit at a table with another worker which I found to be very rude. I had to ask for a high chair several times before she got around to it. It must just be this one server, because on another night the service was "okay."

Overall: I'd definitely go back here for more sushi. Just don't expect royal treatment from the servers and be prepared for the dingy dining room. However, sit at the sushi bar or order take-out and you will be treated to amazing sushi at a very affordable price.

Ok so I had Zipangu YEARS ago and hadn't been back until tonight. My mom and Aunt used to absolutely love this place and said it was the "best sushi in town."When my aunt heard that the original chef Sano was back she said we have to go and try it again. I was a little apprehensive bc like others have said it does look "a little run down and dirty". However, first bite into our sushi and I was so happy she decided to give it another try! We ordered the ninja roll and dynamite roll and got the mush crab to go. Idk about other menu options, but the sushi is fantastic! And I'd say we're both sushi connoisseurs haha. Sano was working in Visalia for a while and Visalia residents are traveling to Fresno just to have his sushi. So seriously people, don't knock it til you try it!

  • *****

So happy to find Sano back in his restaurant. He is the best Sushi chef ever. Back from Visalia.

  • *****

This place looks a little deceiving from the outside, but when you try the food, it's delicious!!! My daughter and I tried the chicken teriyaki, fried rice and a box bento combo. Everything was tasty. We'll definitely come back and try something else.

  • *****

Very delicious sushi!! We had the spicy dragon roll and the spicy melting roll. This place is a little deceiving to look at but the food is oh so goooood!!

  • *****

After more than 10 years they are gone. :(

  • *****

first time i came here was out of the blue and i have to say that it was a little daring, especially for sushi. But my doubtfulness became assuring that the sushi was great! the sushi rolls there are worth the money ranging from $6.95-$12 of sashimi, special rolls and regular sushi rolls. there are some sushi combination plates that are about $20 or more. the quantity of each sushi are worth the money unlike "i love sushi". besides the sushi, there are entree lunch and dinner plates. i've been to most of the dinners than lunch. but overall, their food are a big portion compare to their price. just don't get the box meals for dinner (isn't really worth the money). they cook the beef really well, and has an enormous amount of taste. haven't really tried alot of the menu only the sushi rolls. the only bad thing about is the sushi menu. included are the big ingredients but not whether if its cooked or raw. all in all, great place to go to if you want to hang out. :)

  • *****

ah went again to Teppanyaki for late lunch. Got Richard again..Excellent ..nice touch w/ the noodles and spicy sauce in our veggie meals. The rest of our party loved the food too-shrimp, chicken, calamari, and steak. No skimping here. Lot of leftovers..we couldn't eat it all.

  • *****

I was a little put off at first because it was dirty and rundown.. the service was a tad slow and after asking for a sushi menu, I didn't get one till after the second time I asked. We did teppankyi and our chef didn't come out for a good 20 minutes even though we were the only ones there.

The food however was delicious in my opinion. When I get teppankyi I usually just get fried rice and sushi. So I did this, but didn't even touch the rice because the sushi was extremely filling. Don't remember the name of what I got, but it had jalapeo, crab, cream cheese, something else and it was deep fried. Had to finish it!! Had the rice for lunch today and that was yummy. Everyone's portions were huge as far as teppankyi goes and they all said there's were delicious. They've all been before so I could see why they wanted to come back!

So my only real complaint was the service just being a tad slow.. but the food really made up for it in the end!

  • *****

Our chef Stephen was awesome! Great food & nice guy! Will make reservation for him to cook me dinner soon.

  • *****

If you want great tasting and affordable sushi, this is the place to go visit. They are not stingy with their portions and always have great customer service. The sushi bar is where I always sit and get along with the cooks well. Not sure what you want? Just tell them what you like and they will whip something up for you right away.

My only complaints are you leave the place smelling like it and very crappy cell phone reception

  • *****

So I've been a few places for sushi. I actually lived in Japan for a year and a half. This place is the second best sushi I've ever had (best ever is in North Carolina, long story). My personal favorites are the Zipangu roll and Fresno roll. The teppanyaki (sp?) was excellent too. I've had it twice. Personally appreciative of them having the soccer channel playing at all times. Watched Man U. steamroll a Chinese league team last time I was there.

The ONLY reason I can't give it 5 stars is because it looks pretty shoddy. Love you guys, but you need to redo the interior.

  • *****

Best sushi!!!!!! I love sano sushi.. The best in the valley!!! Two thumbs up! I'm a chef myself so just take it from there!

  • *****

Just had some take-out sushi, it was good. Regular tuna roll and a salmon hand roll. Nothing fancy, but it was fresh tasting and the perfect portion. Will for sure be dining in after the remodel is finished... It's a bit of a hole in the wall for now.

  • *****

the sushi is really good but the service was really slow. they only had 1 teppanyaki chef and 1 sushi chef. i think someone said that they had recently reopened and they didn't have full staffing yet. it seems that at&t signal doesn't reach inside the restaurant so you might have to actually talk to your dinner date.

  • *****

Been there 3 times now and have 0 complaints! Idk why everybody on here is so negative... The Chef was talkative, friendly and fast!
He cooks in a different order than what you're "used" to but if only the average person knew about cross-contamination and what can happen if you cook a certain way. This place cares about your health.

Food portions are really good! If there is extra they will give it to you and the price won't give you a headache after a good meal.

It may not be the flashiest of places like all these other teppanyaki restaurants, but you gotta give em a chance. They are fairly new and just reopened after getting new owners.

In time, some louder music, tv's or just some sort of noise wouldn't make sitting down with strangers that awkward... But hey people! Talk to them be human and just say hi and introduce yourself and small talk.

All in all, prices are relatively cheap especially lunch.
Service is as good as it gets if they are understaffed "hence" the sign in the front HIRING NEED HELP. Recommend someone you know that will give good service then the place will get better. Instead of talking negative and just leave it high and dry.
Let's make our community better not just dawg it out and eat McDonald's for dinner.
Anyways that's all I gotta say!

  • *****

Love this place. Did early teppanyaki lunch & we were seated right away. We called to make reservations but the waitress/hostess said we didn't need one this time. Richard did an excellent job and he accommodated our being vegetarian. You can tell he has plenty of experience. He cooked in the right order w/ no cross contamination from the meat products being prepared. Food was tasty. Rice was prepared first and was perfect. No extra charge for spicy sauce and they will use when cooking your meal upon request. He went over & above to please. The bill was accurate.

On the other comments about the waitress not knowing the menu = Don't hate on her - Its the same menu & prices as before the close 2 or 3 years ago. So you should know what you want. The lunch prices on the veggie and chicken teppanyaki are both great at $7.95

  • *****

Decided to try out this teppanyaki place with my family. The food was excellent. The first owner came back and reopened his restaurant. All new staff and cooks. Prices won't kill the wallet either. Our cook was courteous, funny, and experienced. Also, our server was hustling and providing as much service as she possibly could. It's a hole in the wall but has the potential to rival the other teppanyaki restaurants. Especially with the Dutch bros opening up in the same lot.

Go early though, they began to run out of certain items.
